The zirconia crown is one of the most advanced solutions in modern cosmetic dentistry, providing a natural appearance, durability and biocompatibility all at once. It is an ideal choice for those looking for a stable and aesthetic restoration in the long term.
What is zirconia and how does it work?
Zirconia crowns are made of zirconium dioxide, which is metal-free and highly durable, allowing the tooth to be restored safely and permanently. It restores the shape, function and appearance of the tooth.
Zirconia restorations are biocompatible and well tolerated by the body, so the gum also fits around them with a natural contour.
The key feature of the zirconia crown is that the precise restoration is made using modern, CAD/CAM-controlled technology, so it is perfectly suited to cosmetic smile makeovers and even complex replacement of missing teeth.

Why is a zirconia crown a good choice?
The zirconia crown is a high-end solution in modern dentistry because it provides both aesthetic and functional benefits.
What do you gain with a zirconia crown?
A natural, lifelike appearance:
Zirconia almost perfectly imitates natural teeth, so the restoration can hardly be distinguished from your own tooth. It gives you an authentic, natural-looking smile with new teeth that fit with exceptional precision.
Outstanding durability: Thanks to its high fracture resistance, it withstands chewing forces and provides a stable long-term solution.
A metal-free, biocompatible solution: It does not cause allergies or irritation, so it can be used safely even with sensitive gums or a metal allergy.
Zirconia crown vs. porcelain-fused-to-metal crown
A zirconia crown is a more aesthetic and tissue-friendly solution, while a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is more cost-effective but looks less natural. The choice depends on your aesthetic requirements and individual circumstances.
Advantages of zirconia crowns
- No galvanic effect or allergy As it is metal-free, there are no unpleasant symptoms such as a bad taste in the mouth, tingling, sensitivity, irritation or inflammation of the oral mucosa.
- Natural aesthetics There is no discoloured, greyish gum line; the zirconia framework is white, and the crown’s light transmission is similar to that of your own teeth.
- Better gum response The gum fits snugly around the crown, giving an attractive and healthy appearance.
When should you choose which?
A zirconia crown is ideal if being metal-free is a key consideration and an aesthetically important area needs to be restored.
A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown may be suitable if a more cost-effective solution is needed and back teeth are being restored.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are built on a strong base and can withstand heavy loads, yet the grey metal framework may show through the porcelain veneering, which is not very attractive in the smile zone.
- A metal allergy can develop at any time, which means the crown has to be replaced prematurely.

The difference between fully metal-free ceramic crowns lies mainly in aesthetics and load-bearing capacity: zirconia can be used more widely, while an all-ceramic crown provides the most lifelike appearance, but has a narrower range of indications.

When is a zirconia crown recommended?
A zirconia crown is the perfect choice whenever we want a metal-free restoration that looks like your own original teeth – a kind of “natural-born” smile.
Typical cases
- Discoloured or damaged teeth: The crown completely covers aesthetic problems, creating a uniform smile.
- Root-filled teeth: It strengthens greyish, weakened or broken teeth and prevents further damage.
- Metal allergy: It is completely metal-free, so it is a safe long-term alternative.
- Cosmetic smile makeovers: It is particularly beneficial for front teeth because of its natural appearance.
- Aesthetic replacement of a missing tooth: For dental implant placement and building a complete zirconia tooth

How a zirconia crown is made – Clinident, Budapest
Making a zirconia crown involves several steps and can usually be completed in a few visits. The process is precisely controlled from planning to final fitting.
The treatment in brief: • assessment and planning • tooth preparation • impressions • temporary crown • final fitting
1. Assessment
X-ray: The dentist examines the condition of the teeth and mouth. When making a zirconia crown or a complex smile makeover, proper diagnostics, including a panoramic X-ray, are essential.
Treatment plan: if other problems need to be treated in addition to aesthetic ones, treatments such as scaling, root canal treatment or a post and core build-up, etc. may also be needed. For aesthetic restoration, alternatives such as ceramic veneers or orthodontic treatment may also be considered.
Smile design: whether you have specific ideas or are unsure, it is recommended that smile design precedes the making of the crowns. Planning involves several steps: digital impressions, facial and smile photos, shade selection and creating several smile variations.
On request, the dentist creates a temporary smile mock-up, and the chosen smile can be tried on before the crowns are made, or even worn as a temporary restoration.

2. Preparation
The damaged parts of the tooth are removed and it is ground down (prepared) to a depth of about 1 mm, creating the shape that forms the base for the crown.
3. Impressions
An accurate impression is taken using a digital or conventional method. The desired shade is selected together with the patient.
4. Temporary crown
A temporary restoration – a crown – is always placed on the tooth at the clinic to protect the prepared teeth and gums and provide an acceptable appearance until the final restoration is ready.
5. Fitting the final crown
The dentist checks the fit, colour and shape of the final crowns, and then the crown is placed with a special adhesive. The finished crown is permanently cemented, restoring function and aesthetics.

Making the crown in the dental laboratory
- A zirconia crown requires CAD-CAM technology, meaning it is made using computer-aided design.
- A model is made from the impression taken by the dentist, which the dental technician scans, and then the crown framework is digitally designed on the model displayed on the computer.
- The framework is milled according to the design, and then the porcelain veneering is applied, which gives the restoration its final shape and colour. The complete workflow for making a zirconia crown takes about 7–10 days.
