When do you need professional teeth whitening, and who is the treatment not recommended for?
The colour of your teeth is partly determined by genetics, but teeth also darken because of the food and drinks you consume.
Nowadays, a sparkling white colour also contributes to a healthy appearance, so it is an important aesthetic consideration. If it matters to you not only that your teeth are healthy, but that they visibly look it too, it is worth paying attention to habits that cause discolouration.
- We recommend the treatment for those who are big fans of coffee, tea, red wine and cola and regularly eat ready meals, as the natural and artificial colourings they contain cause rapid and lasting discolouration of the teeth.
- Another great enemy of white teeth is tobacco and cigarettes, which cause brown deposits because of nicotine and tar.
- Among our natural, brightly coloured foods there are also plenty with a milder staining effect, such as carrots or beetroot, which may also contribute to the process, although we eat far smaller amounts of these compared with the above, so their effect is not significant.
We do not recommend peroxide whitening:
- while you are pregnant or breastfeeding,
- if you suffer from tooth sensitivity due to thinning enamel,
- if you have wear at the necks of your teeth, which must be treated first,
- if you have active gum inflammation, which must be resolved first,
- if you are sensitive or allergic to hydrogen peroxide,
- under the age of 16, as the teeth and nerves are still developing, which could lead to lasting sensitivity.
Results are harder to achieve:
- with discolouration caused by medication (e.g. tetracycline),
- with tooth colour changed by excessive fluoride intake,
- with root-filled teeth, where internal whitening is recommended first.
In these cases, it is definitely worth consulting a specialist before starting teeth whitening.
What can you expect if you don’t choose professional treatment?
Although at-home whitening devices are very tempting when you see a celebrity taking a selfie with one in their mouth, you should know that they also have their teeth scaled, and in most cases they have already had one or more in-surgery whitening treatments, so for them the device is more of a maintenance treatment.
Both professional in-surgery and at-home whitening require prior mechanical – ultrasonic – removal of deposits; without this, there is no point starting the treatment.
There is no home remedy or whitening toothpaste that can remove built-up deposits as effectively as the scaling carried out before teeth whitening.

YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW THIS:
If your teeth have never been whitened before, the result from an at-home device will not last; you may have to repeat it as often as every week, which becomes quite annoying after a while. Professional in-surgery whitening takes just 1 session and can give you results that last for years.
According to dentists and dental hygienists, if your teeth have never been whitened, in-surgery whitening is definitely recommended the first time.
All about professional teeth whitening: popular types and the treatment process
There are now many types of in-surgery, or professional, teeth whitening. The main difference is always the device used for whitening. The most popular today are treatments using a cold-light lamp, as these cause the least sensitivity. Next comes laser whitening, the newest technology, which is also popular because of minimal sensitivity, followed by treatments with a traditional, warm-light whitening lamp.
Experience shows that the latter may cause the most intense sensitivity; these are the oldest types, and newer and newer developments followed them.
• For the most striking result, the treatment must always be preceded by thorough scaling, so that the whitening agent can work evenly on the entire surface of the teeth.
• What’s more, for long-lasting white teeth, our dental hygienists also recommend a special toothpaste for home care and the correct brushing technique, which is how a professional treatment can deliver truly long-term results. Of course, this is only an advantage if you want to perfect your smile without more extensive treatment such as porcelain veneers or crowns.
In-surgery teeth whitening – The steps to long-lasting whitening
1. Expert assessment During the consultation before the procedure, we thoroughly examine the teeth for hidden decay so that it can be filled, and resolve any gum irritation. Teeth whitening only makes sense if the smile is both beautiful and healthy.
2. Professional cleaning
Before successful teeth whitening, a thorough oral hygiene treatment is essential, so that the whitening agent can work evenly on the entire surface of the teeth.
3. Isolation and peroxide whitening
The teeth are carefully isolated from the lips and gums so that the gel does not come into contact with them, then the gel is applied to the tooth surface and illuminated with the whitening lamp. The light of the whitening lamp breaks down the peroxide, and the released oxygen penetrates the tooth and whitens it. The whitening gel is illuminated with the special lamp 3 times for 10–15 minutes each.
4. Caring for whitened teeth
After whitening treatment, you should avoid foods and drinks that can stain the teeth, as the enamel is much more sensitive to external influences at this time. At the same time, you should drink plenty of mineral water, which helps replace the teeth’s temporary water loss.

What does the result of teeth whitening depend on and how long does it last?

YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW THIS
Clinident Dental Clinic also provides outstanding quality in cosmetic dentistry, which includes monitoring our patients’ dental health from time to time and reminding them of upcoming check-ups. All this so that the new smile after treatment reflects real and lasting joy.
At-home teeth whitening to maintain white teeth
It is best to think of at-home whitening as a complementary treatment that helps maintain or refresh the result of a previous whitening treatment.
At-home treatment is also available at Clinident, but even at-home whitening is always preceded by scaling, carried out by a specialist under professional conditions at our clinic, so that we can achieve the best whitening effect.

A whitening tray custom-made for your own teeth
For at-home whitening, we take an impression of your teeth at the dental clinic and use it to make a tray. With this more affordable method, you use a personalised tray that protects your gums, into which you apply the whitening product yourself. It is a course of treatment that may involve wearing the tray for a few hours or overnight.
This solution involves treatment over several days, as a lower concentration of the active ingredient is used. Some whitening products need to be worn for 1 hour a day, while others can stay in the mouth all night. A course of about 10–12 days is needed for the perfect effect.

Want long-lasting results after teeth whitening? Pay attention to these!
The effectiveness of teeth whitening depends on what is causing the discolouration and how often the teeth are exposed to it:
• If a tooth has turned yellowish or brownish because of coffee, tea or smoking, its colour can lighten by as much as 6–8 shades.
• Teeth that are greyish or yellowish because of natural pigmentation become 2–3 shades lighter with whitening.
• Whatever colour you start from, your teeth will become noticeably brighter after whitening, and you can maintain this for a long time with a special toothpaste.
